🥋 The Black Eye of the Martial Arts Industry: What No One Wants to Talk About

The Conversation the Industry Avoids—Plus Real Wins, Lead Strategy Wins, Social Reads and More!

Hello, kickers!

🚨 The Kick is Here: This Is the Conversation No One Wants to Have

This week, we’re bringing light to something most in the martial arts industry still avoid talking about: student safety and instructor accountability. Our feature article, The Black Eye of the Martial Arts Industry, dives into the hard truths school owners need to face—from weak background checks to lack of staff training and policy enforcement.

We’re also delivering powerful leadership and mindset content in What’s Kickin’ on Social, a thought-provoking book recommendation in Main Street Millionaire by Codie Sanchez, and as always, a few Martial Memes to bring some levity to the heavy. This one’s a must-read. 👊🔥

🥋 The Black Eye of the Martial Arts Industry: What No One Wants to Talk About

The martial arts industry has a problem—and it’s one no one wants to address.

Yes, McDojo Life has done a great job raising awareness, but there’s a deeper issue being swept under the mat: predatory individuals are slipping through the cracks and being hired to work with children in martial arts schools. And the scary part? We’re letting it happen.

Let’s talk about the ugly truth no one in the industry wants to face.

1. The Silence from Industry “Leaders”

Years ago, I had a call with a well-known consultant in the martial arts world. I asked a direct question:
"What can we do to better train and vet instructors to prevent abuse and keep students safe?"

Their response?
"People know what to do. We don’t need to talk about it."

That’s the problem. Everyone thinks they know what to do, but no one wants to actually do the work—or have the uncomfortable conversation.

2. The Background Check Illusion

Many school owners do basic background checks and think they’re covered. But did you know that most Tier 2 background checks (often considered the standard for public school teachers) only go back two years and don’t check for aliases?

Here’s what else they won’t tell you:
Sex offenders can legally change their names after conviction.
Those new identities often bypass these basic checks.

You need a deeper, more comprehensive check. And you need to update it regularly. This is non-negotiable when you’re responsible for the safety of children.

3. No Training = No Accountability

How many schools have a structured system for teaching staff what’s appropriate and what’s not?

Your team should be trained on:

  • Proper physical correction boundaries (where hands should and shouldn't go)

  • Asking permission before physically correcting a student

  • Policies that prevent staff from ever being alone with a student

  • Clear rules about staff never transporting students or meeting them outside of school events

If your team isn’t trained, you’re gambling with your reputation—and your students' safety.

4. Install Cameras. Everywhere.

(Except bathrooms—obviously.)

Every room, every angle. Period. Not because you don’t trust your team, but because:
 Accountability protects everyone
 Cameras remove ambiguity
They protect your business and your students

Only YOU should have access to the backend camera system. No one else should have the ability to delete or alter footage.

5. Write It Down. Train It Often. Enforce It Without Hesitation.

Have a written employee manual that lays all of this out. Every rule. Every policy. Every non-negotiable.

At our school, there is zero tolerance for violations.
🚫 Alone with a student? Fired.
🚫 Staff-only area with a student? Fired.
🚫 Bathroom incident? Fired.

Parents are trusting us with their kids. We don’t mess around with that. And neither should you.

👊 Final Word: Raise Your Standards

If you’ve read this and feel uncomfortable—that’s a good thing. It means you care.

You don’t rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your standards.

📖 What We’re Reading: Main Street Millionaire by Codie Sanchez

If you’ve ever dreamed of building wealth without chasing venture capital or risking it all on a startup, Main Street Millionaire is your playbook. In this upcoming release, Codie Sanchez breaks down how to create extraordinary wealth by buying and growing “boring” businesses—the kind that fly under the radar but generate serious cash.

This book is a must-read for martial arts school owners who want to think beyond just one location or a single income stream. It’s about understanding how to acquire, systemize, and scale local businesses, including (yes!) martial arts schools, in a way that builds lasting freedom.

Key Takeaways for School Owners:

✅ You don’t have to invent the next big thing—you just have to run ordinary businesses extraordinarily well.
✅ Buy back your time and build real assets instead of staying chained to the mat.
✅ If your school is already profitable and systemized, you’re halfway to being a buyer—or seller—yourself.

This isn’t just a book about business—it’s a book about taking control of your future through smart, strategic ownership.

📈 Relentless Results: Success Stories from RMA

This week, we’re celebrating two major wins from school owners who are plugged into the Relentless Media Agency (RMA) system—and the results speak for themselves.

🔥 Team Martial Arts LivermoreDatabase Reactivation Campaign
Amber launched a reactivation push to bring old leads back to life—without spending a dime on ads. By offering a simple, low-barrier promo to past inquiries, she booked 8 appointments in just a few days! These were cold leads sitting in the system… until they got the right follow-up.

📌 Reminder: Don’t forget to tap into your existing list—there’s gold sitting in your CRM if you know how to work it.

🔥 Dan Merck – Adult Martial Arts Campaign
Adult campaigns are notoriously tricky—but Dan's campaign proves otherwise. In just 7 days, his adult martial arts campaign generated 11 leads with a Cost Per Lead of just $12. That's serious traction in a high-value program area.
